| Balcary Bay Country House Hotel - Castle Douglas |
| General information | |||||||||
|
The Balcary Bay Country House hotel takes its name from the beautiful bay on which it
stands, in an area of Galloway that is romantic in its isolation, and which was once full of
intrigue. Hestan Isle, the hide-out of 17th Century smugglers, fronts the hotel's view across
the Solway Coast, while beyond rise the majestic peaks of the Cumbrian Lake District.
Originally owned by a shipping firm, the house was known to harbour illegal loot in its secret underground passages. Nowadays, whilst the hotel has been modernised and tastefully decorated, it still retains much of its old character (minus the smuggling, it has to be said!) The hotel is under the personal supervision of resident managers, Graeme and Clare Lamb, assuring you of a warm, friendly and efficient service. Traditional Scottish hospitality can be found in the provision of comfortable facilities within the reassuring intimacy of a family-run hotel, creating a quite unique atmosphere. |

Our award-winning cuisine is guaranteed to delight the most discerning palate, based on local
delicacies such as Galloway beef, lamb, lobsters, prawns and - of course - Balcary Bay salmon.
The hotel is fully licensed with a comprehensive wine list which is sure to impress too. Or snuggle down in one of our comfortable lounges, in front of the log fire. There are seventeen well appointed bedrooms, all with en-suite bathroom. Many enjoy magnificent views across the bay, with the remainder overlooking the 3 acres of gardens. Each is individually designed and all benefit from the owners personal touches. All bedrooms are equipped with colour television, radio, telephone, tea and coffee making facilities and hairdrier. An Iron/Ironing board, Trouser Press and a Drying Room are available on request. |

Despite its northerly aspect, Galloway benefits from the Gulf Stream, and enjoys a mild and
long holiday season.
The area has a rich variety of walks, along the coast, over hills and through forests. There is plenty of choice for golfers, nearby are several 9 and 18 hole golf courses, at Colvend, Kirkcudbright, Castle Douglas, Southerness and Dumfries. The outdoor enthusiast can also enjoy cycling, riding and birdwatching. The area also abounds with National Trust historic properties and with some of the loveliest gardens in Scotland along with specialist nurseries, provides a mecca for the garden lover.

Most visitors to Scotland from the south charge on up the M74, under the misapprehension that
Scotland only starts North of Edinburgh and Glasgow, unaware that a few miles to their left
is some of Scotland's most beautiful undiscovered countryside in Dumfries and Galloway.
Balcary Bay Hotel is located off the A711 Dumfries-Kirkcudbright road, two miles out of Auchencairn Village along the shore road. |
